SOMA Eats Interior by Studio KDA with Metro Lighting

Marites Abueg and Keith Morris of Studio KDA teamed up with Lawrence Grown of Metro Lighting to create another set of industrial chic cylinder sconces and pendants for SOMA Eats' second location in San Francisco. Abueg notes, "This time we extended the teal on the extra long pendants so they visually popped to define the central space with its ultra-high ceiling." Copper was used throughout the project, from the light fixtures to the bar taps. The sconce design from the original location was replicated but turned to a vertical orientation to work with the proportions of the space. Fixtures were fabricated in Metro Lighting’s West Berkeley studio.
Exposed brick walls, wood beams, industrial style lighting, reclaimed wood countertops, and rustic wood floors create contrast against the fresh Moroccan-inspired Azurine Tile. This seamless blend of styles provides layers of visual interest to the space.
SOMA Eats is owned by husband-and-wife team Oussama Mannaa, who is from Lebanon, and Shirley Azzghayer, who is Palestinian. They’ve seen Mediterranean spices and ingredients gain favor in recent years. But for them, using sumac or harissa is no novelty. “We grew up with these flavors,” says Azzghayer. “We know how to use them — and sometimes, they’re misused.” The new interior, like the first location, if full of rich turquoise tiles and coppcopper fixtures. “Kind of like our food, you see some hints of the Middle Eastern.”
